Over the past 4-5 weeks I have started up a mini swim squad on Saturday mornings at on our local outdoor heated pools and it has been a bit of a hit! Water temp has been nice, around 24-26 degrees and we have been building up to some nice sessions with 5-7 people coming along.
With a few colds and flu's getting around and very cool conditions the group dwindled this week! There was only myself and a mate of mine Ben Richardson, who is also racing Kon this year. It's great having someone else close having to train hard through winter and we meet up for a few sessions when we can. He has a slightly different lifestyle to me in that he doesn't have kids and works in hospitality so our schedules don't often line up, but we can generally catch up for a session here and there.
This morning we did his planned swim session....4.5km of mixed strength swimming! I'm normally pretty slack with swimming so it's good having him push me and keep me honest.
The pool was 22 degrees so I took the soft option and wore my wetsuit for it and damn glad that I did!
After watching my kids play netball I then headed out for my afternoon long run, which was the most horrible, miserable long run I've ever done I think!
Merewether Beach looking south to the baths.
Merewether Beach looking towards Newcastle and the hills I was about to run.
It was cold, windy, pretty miserable and all I could think about was tucking into a nice hot chocolate pudding in front of the fire! So I cooked a self saucing chocolate pudding with dinner for the family and I ate about half of it, damn it was good!
My run was 2hrs in total, 26km with 6 x 10 min at HIM pace, around 4:20 min/km and 5 min recovery between. All in all I hit the targets nicely, but once again my Garmin saved the workout at halfway when I stopped to talk to some friends for 10 mins, so it is shown as 2 separate workouts.
First 10km
Second 15km
With a 4.5km swim and 26km cold run in the bank I ate up very nicely at dinner time and slept quite soundly....
